Ships-ing: Am I born to be a Sailor? Wednesday, March 4, 2009 |
Are you interested to know about my internship?
Board the boat and have a look!
It's long winded & very technical
Bear with me
The fun part of my internship
Let's put it aside to be shared some other day
Rowing boats were the basic learned in the past
It has then come to practical training on titanic
Somehow I'm wondering
I'm just a petite freshie
How could I navigate through the ocean?
How if pirates attack?
How if shark pops into sight?
How if I get drowned in the tidal wave?
How if the ship is steered to the wrong direction?
What can we do with the worries?
If we never sail through the Atlantis
you will never know the beauty or otherwise of it
So with "go for it" motion
I have departed 3 weeks from the dock
Sailing in the middle of the big ocean
Traveling from Pacific to Atlantis
How do I feel?
Self-contradiction would be the best word
Don't feel like staying in calm sea where there are no sharks and jellyfish
But also fear to be in the howling wave
where you don't even know how well you could swim
Anyhow the principle is there
When the sea is motionless with routine journey
It's not the end of a glaring day
We can jump into the sea for a swim?
Get to know the depth of the water
When the tides are raging
Watch out the steering
Go through them more violently
1st time of venture has broadened my sights
To know, to adapt and to survive
and get along with the PR cultures and organization cultures
Yes to Mr C
What were learned in PR roles and organization communication
are so obviously applied in the real work life
Encroachment?
It happens throughout the company
where those with PR background do not lead
Oh Yeah..I am in the healthcare/consumer marketing department
with senior consultant & supervisor& associates
from bio or science or media background
who know nothing else about PR when they are 1st here
Somehow I wonder is it that equipping yourself with PR knowledge to do PR
that valuable in today's society?
It seems like
anyone could just be a PR if they are equipped with the skills to communicate
you don't really need the cert
It's somehow true
Will a pharmaceutical client pays a PR
who do not know anything about pneumococcal, colorectal products?
Time is gold
Client won't appreciate for your extra time to work or to read up or find out
Ethics of PR?
PR is not ethical?
My instinct prompts me to nod head on that
In a more sophisticated term
we name in liaising with media
In a less-defined term
we name it pleasing the media
instead to ensure the media attendance
building good rapport with them genuinely or with motive is a must
If you are saying you like to talk
is this what you would like and accept?
Walk around and put yourself in their conversation
What stops you from that?
Ethical PR?
Or creating a win-win situation --ethical PR?
Ratio of employees
Doubtfully
Why PR industry is predominant by women?
Pitifully about 3 out of all those staffs involve in PR
are MEN
Men are extincting in the company
That's perhaps the reason
why KK always got sexual harassment by someone
I'm not jealous~~
Culture Shock
Let me introduce you the fish in the ocean.
It's so sad that none of those fish could read & write Chinese
Except for one on maternity leave
Is it that those from English-ed tend to excel in a company?
When would be the day that I could speak English excellently?
Anyhow With the ability to read and write Chinese
I have the opportunity to get involved in the media monitoring of crisis
Whatever whenever and wherever it is
just grab the every little chance
do or perhaps observe
you will learn
PR as POSH investment?
Clients would spend RM30,000++ per month for just merely PR servicing fee
The extra cost for venue are not counted
Is PR service a worth-while investment?
Yes, if you are stronger, capable and knowledgeable than the client
No, if you are not professional at all
To be professional and make you a worth investment item
Widen our knowledge is definitely a need
Yea, I'm still wandering at the shallow part of ocean
Grabbing any learning opportunity
No fear no fear
Though I'm
Fear of making silly mistake
Fear of speaking to the top
Job delegation
What we do at internship?
What do I expect to learn from internship?
Apart from learning as much as I could
I expect to get involved in clients' project
Given chance to plan and contribute ideas and be part of them
To achieve this, we have to be very outstanding
Can we? Yea...learn to be a skilled technician To me I would like to learn everything from head to toe Routine works are unavoidable
Media monitoring: Translation & Summary practice
I believe every intern is doing this currently
In a negative way
we can say the bosses are lazy to look up the papers
In a positive way
This is the best way for us to know what the client wants
Instead of having supervisor to lecture us the bulk of information
One thing good for Malaysian who are trilingual to work in Malaysia
is that we can read, write and speak both 3 languages
Not to be excellent in either one but at least moderate at our age
My job includes translating and proofreading releases & news
Believe it or not?
Sorting those words that are hard to translate is indeed fun sometimes
Let's translate serai into english and some myths of contraception!
How do you feel?
Media relations: Follow up with media and pitch to invite them
Call up to about 100 publications to check on the advisory and RSVPs
What is RSVP?
It's a cool jargon used in media...
It's boring if you think this is a simple call up
Let's make it fun
Sort out way to pitch them
or perhaps change your style in speaking with them
and look for the best style for best person
There is no one style fits all
Pitching them needs skills
How would you pitch an electronic product to parenting and health magazine?
It's something to do with twisting and cracking your brain
For a pitching angle
On-site support
Attended World Kidney Day Press Conference
Worked as media registrar It was an eye-opener
Badge of World Kidney Day in March
If not of this I won't be in dilemma on issues revolving PR ethics
The way PR treats others Is with pure sincerity or with motive?
Helped out in World Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month Media Workshop
It was in a room at One World Hotel
in which the media were invited to a workshop
Nice pencil box prepared by One World Hotel~Cool
Sorry for the poor quality of photo with my little handphone
Look there are pen, pencil, clips, eraser, ruler, stapler in the box
That's the way PR works
Events Management
Liaise with hotels on the booking of rooms for clients' usage
It seems to be simple but there are things to learn
for the very first exposure
some unfamiliar terms
like recce, signage, ways of payment:undertaking, room setting......
Internal Training
My company do provide training starting from this week
for those who are in the company for less than 6 months
So do interns
I'm happy that we're part of them
and happy with the sharing
given by our experienced supervisors and consultants
As mentioned by them
We work with client not work for client
So it does not mean that we have to sacrifice all our time
to prove that we perform well and attend to the client whole-heartedly
we are paid for the 7 1/2 working hours but not more than that
If we have to OT all the time
our time management is really in crisis
is that true?
how much it applies to PR firm?
Fear of doing PR
Somehow my previous stupid act is still playing in my mind
At my welcome lunch, my department director threw this question to me
What would you do if your client asked you to do a program for cervical cancer?
I have spoken something very stupid and then she changed it to let's make it easier
How about breast cancer?
Seriously
I'm now a healthcare idiot for me to think of any plan
I should have answered it properly
I would research on the trend and understand how is the breast cancer
By then only select targeted audiences
And plan relevant program towards it
Different programs cater at different level of target audiences
Perhaps a tie-up with bra companies & others
Perhaps a media workshop
Perhaps ..
I was blank that day!!
I have a good supervisor, Audrey
who is cute, smart and energetic
patient and sincere
someone that I do really respect
Hope to learn more from her and the company
